Star Wars: Visions’ Ronin Returns in New Manga-Inspired Comic Tale

Star Wars: Visions’ Ronin Returns in New Manga-Inspired Comic Tale

Featuring animated short films taking place in the Star Wars mythos, Star Wars: Visions will be expanding into the comic book sphere with a Marvel series by the same name that adds a manga twist to the Galaxy far far away. The first details of the comic book’s debut issue have surfaced, revealing it will focus on the Ronin from the first episode, “The Duel,” a mysterious Sith who protects the innocent.

The first season of Star Wars: Visions was released on Disney+ on September 22, 2022, with seven Japanese animation studios producing different episodes and their talented creators exploring their own interpretation of the space opera. It was revealed at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2022 that the animated series would become a comic book. Fans of the television series will also be excited to know Star Wars: Visions has been renewed for a second season and is set to release in Spring 2023.

The official has an exclusive preview of Marvel’s September 2022 Star Wars comics featuring the new Star Wars: Visions comic book series spinning out of the animated anthology. Among the details and images released are the official cover for the first issue, concept sketches, and solicitation information. Takashi Okazaki will be pulling double duties as both the writer and artist for at least the first issue, which features his Ronin character from the first episode of Star Wars: Visions, “The Duel” (an episode that also arguably introduced the best Sith light saber).

It’s fitting that Okazaki will be tackling the writing and art for the series since he is the lead writer for “The Duel” episode, which was directed by Takanobu Mizuno and animated by Kamikaze Douga. Okazaki is also well-known for his work writing and illustrating the Afro Samurai manga. The solicitation information for Star Wars: Visions #1 asserts that Okazaki will be bringing readers a brand new story and not tread the same ground that the animated short did. Although just like the animated series, the comic book series makes a promise that it will “The mythology of STAR WARS infused with elements of Feudal Japan,” which “makes this issue a MUST READ for STAR WARS and MANGA fans alike!”

This is also not the first time “The Duel” has been adapted into another format, as a novel expanding on the episode, Ronin: A Visions Novel, written by Emma Mieko Candon, was previously released in October 2021. But the first issue of the Star Wars: Visions comic featuring Okazaki’s Ronin story will become available in comic book stores in September 2022. The series will begin releasing alongside other Marvel Star Wars titles like Obi-Wan (another comic book spin-off promoting a Disney+ series), Han Solo & Chewbacca, and Darth Vader.
